Josie's breakfast usually consists of eating, then refusing to eat, self-inflicted gagging, more eating with mmmm noises, dropping things on the floor, inadvertently getting food bits stuck to her palms... and in this case, some entertaining sound effects.
She's still not a big fan of eating anything but smooth purees, but she is starting to get the hang of some finger-foods like baby puffs and tofu pieces (when she's in a good mood). On multiple occasions, we have pulled her out of the highchair and discovered star-shaped imprints on her thighs from the baby puffs (shaped like stars) that she pushes off her tray, which then become wedged between her butt and the seat.

Summer in September
This weekend was a full of fun in the sun, with the summer weather gripping onto the precipice of fall.
Hayashi Picnic
We drove directly into the heart of the heat wave on Saturday, but for good reason. We got together with the Hayashi side of the family in Sacramento for a potluck at Witter Ranch Park. There were about 30 of us there, kids, babies and dogs, and all. Josie was glad to get into the air-conditioned car for a good nap on the way home.
Cooling Off
After getting back to our warm stuffy house, we go out the kiddie pool for Josie to chill out a bit. She got excited just watching Dad blow it up on the deck. She was also able to supervise his work in the garden and do a little quality control (taste testing) on the zucchini.
West Office Picnic
Sunday, we headed out to Buckeye Point near San Rafael, for more outdoor socializing and yummy picnic fare, this time for Lisa's office picnic. Again, kids, babies, and very cute dogs. Josie was thoroughly entertained...

Later that day, Zizi and Boppa babysat so Mom and Dad could go out for a baby-free dinner with friends. What a great way to end a whirlwind weekend!

Vote!
No, I'm not talking about the November elections (but that is important, too!). I'm talking about voting for when you think Josie will take her first steps and start walking. Add your guess to the poll on the right. Sorry, no cash prize for the winners.

Pushing Paper
Here's a video of Josie pushing parchment paper across the carpet. She enjoys this activity. She does the same thing with washcloths across the hardwood floor. Maybe she likes the feeling on her hands?

9 months old
Josie is 9 months old today. That is roughly 270 days old. Each day is a significant portion of her entire life, like 0.3%. Me, on the other hand: I am roughly 12,230 days old. A single day is .008% of my life. With this much perspective, a single day goes 45 times faster for me than it does for her.
If I could fit my age into Josie's timeframe, the sun would be rising to start a new day every 32 minutes.
We were speculating about why she didn't wake up in the morning excitedly to Lisa, after Lisa came back from a one-night business trip. Maybe she had forgotten that Lisa was gone? Just 12 hours of sleeping would make the awareness of Lisa's departure 0.15% of her life ago. That is like sleeping nearly a month (22 days) from my time perspective! Maybe after sleeping 22 days I would also forget what happened just before.
For Josie, waiting another 3 months until her first birthday party is like me waiting a decade for my next birthday. I remember time moving like this when I was a kid. My next birthday 6 months in the future might as well have been infinitely far away. Dan

Day at the Beach
We spent the day up north, walking around the tiny town of Occidental, stopping at the Wild Flour bakery and kitchen garden in Freestone, and hanging out on the beach at Bodega Bay. It was beautiful and relaxing. Josie was fascinated by the sound of the waves crashing on the shore, and loved watching the dogs play in the water (of course). We set up the tent for a little shade while we ate lunch and then Josie had a chance to experience the cold water on her little toes.
